The free compliance score — what it is, and what it is not
A starting map of gaps. Not a certification, not an OCR blessing, not a substitute for a risk analysis.

Short answer: The free compliance score is a quick, no-cost snapshot that highlights likely security and HIPAA gaps in a dental practice. It is a starting map. It is not a HIPAA certification, not an approval from the Office for Civil Rights (OCR), and not a substitute for the documented risk analysis the HIPAA Security Rule requires.
At a glance
| What it is | A starting map of likely gaps |
| What it is not | A certification, an OCR approval, or a risk analysis |
| Cost | Free |
| Why it exists | To make the first conversation concrete |
| Next step | A formal risk analysis and a risk management plan |
What is the free compliance score?
It is a first-pass assessment that gives a practice a rough picture of where its security and HIPAA posture stands. It surfaces common gaps such as missing MFA, unverified backups, unmanaged devices, absent policies or an out-of-date risk analysis, and orders them so a practice knows where to look first.
What the score is not
Precision matters here, because the single most common misunderstanding in HIPAA is that a badge equals compliance.
- It is not a HIPAA certification. There is no official government HIPAA certification for practices or for MSPs. See What "HIPAA-compliant MSP" means.
- It is not an OCR blessing. The HHS Office for Civil Rights does not pre-approve a practice's program, and a score does not predict the outcome of an investigation.
- It is not a risk analysis. The Security Rule requires an accurate and thorough assessment of risks to ePHI, documented and kept current. A score points toward that work; it does not replace it. See Risk analysis vs risk management.
- It is not legal advice. Questions about obligations in your situation belong with qualified counsel.
What is it good for?
- Orientation. A practice that has never looked at its posture gets a concrete list instead of a vague worry.
- Prioritization. Not every gap is equally urgent; a ranked starting list helps a limited budget go to the right places first.
- Conversation. It turns a first call with an MSP from a sales conversation into a working session.
- Trend. Re-running it after remediation shows direction of travel.
What happens after the score?
The honest next step is a formal risk analysis and a risk management plan, then evidence that the plan was executed: patching logs, MFA enforcement, backup test records, training attendance, access reviews. On CyberDental's Ultimate plan, HIPAA compliance management is part of the service. See Remote, Priority, Ultimate, Concierge.
Is there a catch?
The catch is the same as for any free assessment: its purpose is to start a relationship. The difference is in what it promises. A responsible score tells you where you stand and what it cannot tell you.
Frequently asked questions
Is the CyberDental compliance score a HIPAA certification?
No. There is no official HIPAA certification for practices or MSPs. The score is a starting map of likely security and compliance gaps.
Does the compliance score replace a HIPAA risk analysis?
No. The HIPAA Security Rule requires a documented, accurate and thorough risk analysis. The score helps you prioritize but does not satisfy that requirement.
Is the free compliance score really free?
Yes. It is offered at no cost as a first step for dental practices.
